Important 2009
Rule Change Affecting Non-wood Bats
Check for BPF 1.15
before buying a new bat
Starting
with the 2009 season there is an important change to Little League Baseball
Rules and Regulations regarding bats for Majors division and below. This affects
all baseball players in Tee Ball, Modified, Minors and Majors. All non-wood bats
must be printed with BPF 1.15 or below. BPF (Bat Performance Factor) is a
measure of how fast a ball "jumps" off the bat compared to
how a ball rebounds off a wall at a controlled speed. A 15% faster rebound = a
BPF of 1.15. This is a matter of safety which is the highest priority to Little
League International and to Taconic Little League. All non-wood baseball bats
manufactured since the early 90's that are labeled as approved for play in
Little League have a BPF of 1.15 or less. However, many are not labeled with the
BPF rating. Starting with this season bats must be labeled with the BPF and it
must be 1.15 or below. This may make most bats owned by individual players
illegal; if that is the case they cannot be used for play in Little
League. At the moment most of the league owned bats are not printed with the BPF,
but we will make sure that every team has approved equipment prior to the start
of practice for the 2009 season. This rule change does not apply to Junior,
Senior or Big League and does not apply to any softball divisions.
